Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left the family of Ford, they were taken care of by her mother, grandmother as well as godparents. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. Ford joined in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she was not a fit. Ford then applied for a spot in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring on Doctor Who. Ford did not complete her degree in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that moment, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in television shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly as well as a part of The Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy that became part of her repertoire in 1996.
